Artist Talk with Ron Te Kawa
Artist Talk with Ron Te Kawa
Join us for an inspiring evening with Ron Te Kawa, one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated contemporary Māori textile artists. Renowned for his vibrant and deeply personal Sparkly Whakapapa Quilts, Ron’s work weaves together whakapapa (genealogy), Māori legends, and imaginative storytelling through bold colour, texture, and pattern.
Ron’s practice is rooted in sustainability, often using reclaimed fabrics to create artworks that are both visually stunning and culturally significant. His quilts are taonga (treasures) that celebrate identity, resilience, and creativity.
During this session, Ron will share insights into his artistic journey, showcase examples of his work, and engage in an open kōrero with attendees. This is a relaxed, welcoming opportunity to connect with local creatives and enjoy meaningful discussion.
